Tips to keep your kid safe during this training.
As a parent, you should note the following before beginning this training.
- Safety gear. Ensure that your kid has the safety gear on before you begin training. The safety gear includes; helmets, pads, and skating shoes. You may be risking your kid’s safety if you intend to start this training without the named gear. In the “what you need” section, we have highlighted some of these necessities.
- Train on a soft surface. Let’s be honest; the first training will involve a lot of falling. Ensure that your kid trains on a safe and soft surface. You can opt for a surface that has carpet or a mat.
- Train on a flat surface. Unless your kid is a pro, you should choose a flat surface where they can accelerate slowly or when they apply the push. Ensure that the place is open and away from danger.
- Make the training regular. Kids forget stuff very first. Therefore, make it a routine to remind them how they should do something. Remind them of how they should push the skateboard, maintain an athletic stance, step on the stake board right, and many more. The key thing is reminding them.

You don’t just wake up and start teaching your kids how to skate. You’ll need some work tools to keep your training effective, efficient, and full of fun. Here are a few things you’ll need in this training.
A helmet is the primary protection tool for your toddler, and therefore, you should be cautious about the type and size of the helmet you choose. Ensure you get the right size, and your kid uses it properly. The helmet should protect all the critical parts of the head.
Trainers teach kids to fall with their knees and elbows and not using their hands to land. Landing using hands could cause fractures, unlike elbows and knees. Therefore, it would help if you bought your kids some protective elbow and knee pads. They say protection is better than cure.
- Quality shoes
Your kid will be stepping on the skateboard and, therefore, ensure that the shoe they’re wearing will grip on the board properly. To be honest, shoes are very important when skateboarding.
- A good quality skateboards
A skateboard is what will be moving your kid; therefore, go for the best. Ensure that you buy your kid the right size of the skateboard.

After ensuring all the above needs have been sort, your kid can now begin the training. Let’s start.
If your kid has never done this before, you should ensure they have the balance first. The balance will improve their confidence later when the skateboard starts moving. Instilling confidence is not giving them a super-motivational talk; it ensures that they are practically comfortable standing on the skateboard.
To ensure they have balance, ask them to start by placing their front foot on the front bolts. On the other hand, let them place the back foot on the back bolts. They don’t need to move the board because we’re just instilling some confidence in them. The kid can do this several times. If your kid rides a bicycle, this might be a walk in the park; however, this might take some time if they haven’t.
Stepping on the board
Once they have mastered the balance, it’s time to get rolling. In this step, the kid should place the foot like they did when practicing balancing. The front foot should be on the front bolts of the skateboard. Ensure the toes of your kid and their whole body are facing where the skate will move to.
Stance and positioning
When skating, guide your kid to maintain an athletic stance. To maintain an athletic stance, ensure that your knees are under your shoulders. Do not lean too much in front or too much at the back. If you stay upright, you might be affected by the skate’s movement and end up moving too much in front or at the back. As a result, your kid will fall.
Keeping an athletic stance lowers your center of gravity, and as a result, you become more stable. Also, to enhance your stability, even more, keep your body weight at the ball of the foot.
Keep the front foot on the front bolts in a perpendicular way to the board. Then, shift the kid’s body to an athletic stance to almost parallel the upper body to the skateboard. Position the kid’s head so that they can see where they are going.
Guide the kid to apply one push using the back foot, and then, as the skateboard moves, remind them to place the back foot on the back bolts.
Launching might take some time for the kid to master but, they master it with time.
Ensure that your kid spares some time to practice every day. There is no way to mastery but making it a daily routine to practice. You can summarize all the above steps into four steps;
- Guide the kid to step on the front bolts using their front foot
- Let the kid maintain an athletic stance with the body weight at the ball of the foot.
- Guide them to apply a push or two using the back foot
- Guide the kid to step on the back bolts using the back foot.
